Hello Ivan,

I just wanted to let you know that this is the best web-site that I have seen on the subject. I suffer from ulcerative colitis (proctitis and ulcerative-colitis are used interchangeably with me). I went on a very similar diet last June, although I was not eating potatoes and was eating meat. I was symptom free for about 4 months. I am now off of the diet and am having flare-ups so I am ready to stick to it for good (I was not sure if the diet was helping me but now I am sure). I have only had the disease for about 18 months.

Dear Ivan, Further to your message here is a few thoughts on my health problems over the past few years for your site. I left hospital in 2002 with severe proctitis (inflammation of the rectum etc) after radiotherapy for prostate cancer. The result was severe bleeding which necessitated several blood transfusion. Two treatments with formalin only helped to a degree and made me very uncomfortable. When I was discharged I was told that it probably would not get any better and I would have to put up with the situation. I found your website after searching the net for information on proctitis and saw that you had had treatment with the Chinese medical Center in Leeds.
I discussed my problem with Dr. Chang at the Center who said he would be able to help me. You can imagine that I was greatly encouraged by this but was not totally convinced that Chinese herbs would be able to help where conventional treatments had, to a large extent failed. I traveled to Leeds and was examined by Dr. Chang and started the twice daily treatment with the specially prepared herbs. To cut a long story short I can report that the treatment has been very successful. It took time before the effects became apparent; it seems that the herbs work over a period of time and are not a "quick fix" like some NHS medications good as they are on occasion. I am continuing with the herbs as they have helped with my general health and would recommend that the herbal treatment should be seriously considered by anyone suffering from this, and perhaps other modern maladies which afflict us sometimes in our lives. Dr Chang is fully qualified in western as well as Chinese medical practices and has served in a large hospital back in his own country. In my enthusiasm to find an answer to my very sore intestines I forgot my manners in my previous email. I would like to say what a informative and well presented web site this is. There is such a wealth of information to be found on the net, but so little of it is useful. Your site is excellent and I actually felt I could "get better" after reading it.

On reviewing your Proctitis pages over a year ago we subscribed to your diet of Gluten free foods and fasting 3-8 days with success. My condition evolved from Radiation induced Proctitis .On your advice I contacted a Chinese herbalist and Naturopathic Physician De.Peter Yam,ND of Victoria B.C Canada who diagnosed my causes with blood analysis as a Candida-Yeast Infection and has treated me with Herbogesic, Acupuncture, & Homeopathic Liquids., along with a Candida Diet program similar to your eating requirements with further success.

I am looking forward coupled with both programmes to complete freedom from this dreaded infliction.

Thanks for your valuable advice. I always knew that you would reply because it is obvious from your web site that you care a great deal about your fellow sufferers. This time last year I was in despair about how little doctors and various colitis associations could do to help me. I was repeatedly told that diet is irrelevant to my condition. How glad I am that I came across your web site. My health has improved so dramatically since then that I was able to participate in a 14km fun run a few weeks ago. I will continue to stay gluten-free and be kinder to my insides as you suggest.
I immediately stopped eating anything I suspected to contain gluten. For the last 9 months I have been totally symptom free, except when I have occasionally eaten something wrong by mistake. Even the rashes have disappeared.

During this fast, for the first time in 2 years, the irritating, flaking, rash on my face, scalp & chest completely disappeared. Shortly after my first meal my rash returned. They served me sandwiches in my hospital bed as soon as the colonoscopy was over. Michael 29/08/02
